About the work
In this painting, Dix parodies the theme of the Sunday walk, which was obligatory in middle-class families for a long time. This not only served to exercise the family together, but was also intended to present a supposed family idyll. The painting, however, breaks with the presented idyll. The walkers have gaunt faces and a tired and desolate expression. In addition, the fragile figures in their marionette-like gait hardly seem to find a foothold on the ground. The place depicted is the surroundings of the Hockstein in Saxon Switzerland.
