About the work
This pencil drawing presents the view of Monte Verità above Lago Maggiore towards the south. The view is partially obscured by palms and other trees growing in the foreground right below the viewer’s feet. Schmidt-Rottluff took up this same subject several times in different techniques. Here he only suggested the Alpine lake landscape in the background with fine pencil strokes, rendering the crowns of the palm trees in the foreground in stronger ones. This sheet, together with the
pencil drawings Motiv am Lago (Motif by the Lake) and Dorf im Tessin (Village in the Ticino), comes from a series with Ticino motifs that were all done in October 1953 and that the artist dedicated to his brother Kurt (the present one to his wife Hilde as well) on 30 April 1954.
