About the work
Apart from the word «Tivoli” given with the signature, the picture contains no other pointer to the place Reinhart visited. Instead of the usual Tivoli motifs, such as the Temple of the Sybil, the Cascatelle or the Neptune Grotto, he shows a picturesque hilly section of forest with lush vegetation at a bend in the Aniene river, behind which the peaks of the Sabine Hills rise up in a fine mist. Reinhart was more interested in the pictorial internalisation of the poetic character of this ancient cultural landscape than in a topographical portrayal.
