Artist
Ferdinand Olivier 1785 – 1841
About the work
Ferdinand Olivier saw a divine principle, an order only revealed through faith, in all the phenomena of the visible world. The two drawings on show here are important works as well as vivid proof of his understanding of art. In the church graveyard present and eternity meet, visible signs of the departed above the earth, their deceased bodies below. Church and cemetery provide a motif frequently depicted in Olivier’s work to symbolise the unity of life and death. For him, a pivotal idea of Nazarene art was concentrated in the graveyard.
