About the work
Having already visited Terracina for several days in June 1835 on his way to Naples during his three-year sojourn in Italy, Morgenstern returned there for a longer stay in May 1836.
In this drawing the artist does not depict the usual view from the nearby heights of the city, with the single palm tree, the castello and up as far as Monte Circeo. Instead this view from the north-west is of the contorted silhouette of the old city with its landscape of interwoven rooftops and the Chiesa del Purgatorio visible at the side. It may be assumed that the draughtsman visible at the bottom right is the artist himself.
