Artist
Johann Theodor Eusebius Faber 1772 – 1852
About the work
Faber was born in Gottleuba in the Eastern Ore Mountains and later moved to Dresden, where he trained as a landscape painter. His repertoire included views from the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and of his Dresden surroundings. This depiction of Pirna is one of those views. Our gaze is directed downstream. On the one hand, our eyes are guided in an elegant swing to the right to the river Elbe and the pathway running along it. On the other, our attention is drawn to the left half of the picture by the Sonnenstein Castle and the steeple of St. Marien Chruch. The breadth of the view and the inclusion of the figure of a viewer are classic constituents of an idyllic landscape.
