About the work
Large-format depictions of groups of striking trees and impressive forest scenarios were among the preferred motifs of artists at the time. The two wild animals seem tiny beneath the sprawling branches thus underscoring the gigantic size of the oak trees depicted. The considerable extent of their spatial depth is skilfully suggested in the drawing by the sophisticated gradations of light and shade. Kummer devoted himself to studying trees at an early stage in his career. During his travels he also paid attention to their different manifestations.
