Artist
Jakob Philipp Hackert 1737 – 1807
About the work
Hackert undertook his first trip to the Gulf of Naples and Sorrento in 1770. This region was already famous in antiquity for its mild climate and the charms of the landscape. After the demise of the Roman Empire it had been totally neglected due to its almost inaccessible location. Hackert was among the first artists to visit the region again and capture its unusual beauty in sketches. He is credited with having rediscovered the curious cliff formations with their rich vegetation and the wonderful views of the Gulf of Naples from the upper plateau.
