Artist
Heinrich Dreber 1822 – 1875
About the work
The composition can most likely be dated back to Dreber’s trip through the Alban Hills in Central Italy in summer 1851. The image is largely dominated by a huge group of trees allowing just a few views of the mountain ridges in the background. Initially our gaze is directed left, to the group of women on the lakeshore. Their clothing conjures up a scene from Antiquity. The rocks in the foreground are also reminiscent of architectural fragments submerged in the past. In this landscape, with its both ideal and real phenomena, Dreber unites history, ancient myth and contemporary experience.
