Artist
Carl Gustav Carus 1789 – 1869
About the work
At an early stage in his career Carus realised the particular suitability of charcoal drawings for depicting nocturnal scenes by moonlight. With these improvisations he was also able to build swiftly on his earlier artistic successes. Such works inspired by specific occasions were also suitable for graphically illustrating thoughts of a philosophical or medical nature, as indicated by this drawing showing a radiant fountain seen through a dark archway. According to the inscription, Carus did it as a gift on the occasion of his aunt Luise’s successful eye operation.
