About the work
The artist did this water coloured pen-and-ink drawing when he was 31 years old and still struggling for recognition. Richter himself wrote the date of origin on the drawing, 3 June 1835, as well as the location, «In der Nassau bei Meißen” («In Naussau near Meißen”). Nassau is an old marshland through which the original Elbe river flowed. It was later drained by means of small watercourses. The wide-ranging landscape panorama is rendered by means of fine wavering lines and gains its great colour appeal from the nuances of the delicate watercolours.
