Artist
Karl Schmidt-Rottluff 1884 – 1976
About the work
The Baltic Sea was an unfailing source of inspiration to Schmidt-Rottluff throughout his life. Two things were important to him during his stays at the seaside – looking for new artistic subjects and being able to concentrate on his work, completely undisturbed by outside influences. In 1914 he spent the early summer in Hohwacht, a small fishing village on the eastern edge of the Bay of Lubeck. The moonlight illuminates the bay beyond the steep cliffs with their silhouettes of trees, bushes and the black boulders on the beach, which are steeped in the darkness of night. This restless composition of crystalline, fragmented shapes has a gloomy, threatening feel, which reflected the artist’s mental state.
