Artist
Johann Gottfried Pulian 1809 – 1875
About the work
In his Memoirs, Adrian Ludwig Richter reports that Pulian was one of the first students in Meißen with whom he made «short excursions to the Bohemian Uplands”. It is not known whether these excursions also extended to Karlštejn, located south-west of Prague. There can be no doubt, however, that Pulian’s view of the castle built by Emperor Karl IV is a study from nature.
Although Pulain’s work has not been thoroughly researched, the view of Karlštejn Castle may well have been done during the time he spent in Saxony, when his later interest in the depiction of medieval buildings was already in evidence.
