About the work
Quarries on Montmartre depicts the situation outside the gates of Paris that confronted visitors in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Gypsum was quarried in long tunnels and fired in lime kilns. Pre-industrial production sites, the work of people in rural areas and their living conditions in natural surroundings that were anything but idyllic ranked among Wille’s favourite motifs in a pictorial world that was inspired by Dutch genre paintings.
