Artist
Franz Innocenz Josef Kobell 1749 – 1822
About the work
Without using a framing boundary, Kobell presents the view across the Isar river to the embankment, above which is a sky streaked with clouds. The embankment, stretching over three horizontal levels and covered with shrubbery, is reflected in the water. The artist depicts an immediate subjective impression of nature, painting with a brush directly onto the paper without a preliminary drawing. This work is one of the sketch-like monochrome brush drawings which were done for their own sake and not as preliminaries for works to be executed later. They were unique in German art around 1800 because of their unconventionality.
