Artist
Christian Friedrich Gille 1805 – 1899
About the work
Of all Johan Christian Dahl’s students in Dresden, Christian Friedrich Gille, from Ballenstedt in the Harz region, was the most gifted. The oeuvre that has been handed down to us contains a separate group of similar, almost monumentally conceived, tree portraits such as this one. These large pictorial compositions are based on intense experiences of nature. The sun spots underscored by the white highlights on the forest floor and the bright reflections on the trunks and branches of the trees all point to the artist’s early preoccupation with the effects of light.
