About the work
This large format drawing is part of study material that Willers produced in the course of his travels in Greece between 1857 and 1859. As evidenced by a comparison with other works by this artist, the strikingly large format is in no way unusual in his oeuvre. On closer examination, tiny holes made by nails or tacks can be seen along the edge of the picture, indicating that the study was secured to the wall of his studio.
