About the work
The face, illuminated against the black background and facing forward, is reminiscent of a ‘Vera Icon’, an image not created by human hands. Here, it is not the face of Christ, but that of an artist at the age of 32. Munch places his name and the year of creation, 1895, at the top of the picture, and at the bottom lies a bony arm as a symbol of transience. The additional framing makes it look like an epitaph. In the centre, however, life relaxes, always conscious of practising death, as Arthur Schopenhauer called it.
