Artist
Heinrich Woldemar Rau 1827 – 1889
About the work
Woldemar Rau, who hailed from a Dresden family of stone printers, attended the Dresden art academy from 1841 to 1852. The landscape painter Ludwig Richter was an important teacher of his and introduced him to free-hand drawing after nature. The watercolour Villa Pamphili, which is precisely dated, testifies to his stay in Italy. It is a view of the park called Villa Doria Pamphili located on the Via Aurelia Antica not far from the centre of Rome. Today the expansive complex is still one of Rome’s largest parks.
