Artist
Martin von Molitor 1759 – 1812
About the work
At first sight, the impression is of a directly observed landscape painted after nature. The view is from a height across a plain through which a river winds its way and up to a distant mountain range. The staggering of the spatial depth is achieved by the alternation of dark and bright sections in the background. This is not in fact the reproduction of a real, but of an ideal landscape in which Molitor has worked the impressions of nature gained on his travels and excursions into an artistic composition.
