About the work
Carl Friedrich von Rumohr, art historian and theorist, gastrosoph, collector, art agent and patron, also did drawings. This particular one was done after his second trip to Italy. It adheres to a classical structure, with a framing tree and shrubbery in the foreground from out of which a pathway winds past washerwomen at a well house. The mountain town enthroned on the hill with its numerous slim line tower houses is reminiscent of San Gimignano near Florence. Like all the artist’s landscapes, however, this one also eludes any clear topographical identification.
