Artist
Franz Albert Venus 1842 – 1871
About the work
Two trips that Venus made to Italy from 1866 to 1867 and from 1868 to 1869 were decisive for his work. The contact with other artists in Italy motivated him to shift his focus from the line to colour. Unfortunately, he had only very little time to reap the benefits of his Italian journeys; he died on 27 June 1871. Given the horizontally placed colour planes and the atmospheric density of the coloration Landschaft mit Ruine und Staffage is quite characteristic of the works Venus produced in Italy.
