About the work
Joseph Thürmer was professor of architecture at the Dresden art academy from 1827 to 1833, where he directed the architecture school which had been newly set up at the time. Thürmer originally came from Munich, where he had studied at the academy under Karl von Fischer. An award he had received for a completed design of a residence enabled him to travel to Italy. Thürmer was constantly preoccupied with capturing ancient monuments and historical church buildings in drawings and etchings, which he then published. The drawing Roman Church was most probably done in this context around 1820.
