About the work
Around 1906, whilst studying architecture in Dresden, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff began to explore lithography, which he regarded as the most important printmaking medium alongside woodcut. Alongside landscape motifs and village scenes, his focus here is on urban life in Dresden. Views such as the Hofkirche (Dresden), pavilions in the Großer Garten, or central squares demonstrate his interest in urban scenes. The dynamic, sketch-like lines lend the depiction a shimmering vitality and bear witness to an immediate, rapid capture of the subject.
