Artist
Franz Albert Venus 1842 – 1871
About the work
Venus was a student of Ludwig Richter’s at the Dresden art academy, where he trained as a landscape painter. He visited Italy twice on study trips. His Gebirgslandschaft bei Civitella was done on his first trip, from 1866 to 1867. Venus sketched the main features of the landscape in pencil over which he applied thin layers of watercolour. The outlines conjure up landscape areas to which the line then gives form. The sparse colouration draws our attention to the atmospheric qualities that can be perceived.
