Artist
Otto Dix 1891 – 1969
About the work
The self-portrait was created under the impression of the postwar period. In March 1945, Dix was drafted for military service. Just one month later he was taken prisoner of war in France. Until his release in February 1946, he spent a year in Colmar, Alsace. In front of a barren, snowcovered winter landscape, he shows himself wrapped in a thick coat. The fur hat is pulled far into his face. From deeply shadowed eyes he looks past the viewer. To the right in the background, ruins already seem to have become part of the landscape and thus, to a certain extent, normality.
