after a paintnig by Allart van Everdingen
Artist
Johann Christian Reinhart 1761 – 1847
About the work
Johann Christian Reinhart came to Dresden in 1783 to take private lessons from Johann Christian Klengel. The latter advocated the simultaneous study of nature and the Old Masters. He considered the 17th century Dutch landscape painters especially worthy of imitation. Reinhart’s watercolour is a copy after Allart van Everdingen’s painting Deer Hunting in a Mountainous Region of 1649 in the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden. The theme of the hunt is sure to have had a special attraction for Reinhart, as he later became a passionate hunter and repeatedly used hunters as staffage in his landscapes.
