Artist
Jakob Philipp Hackert 1737 – 1807
About the work
Jakob Philipp Hackert, who was born in Prenzlau, enjoyed the support of prominent patrons and promoters throughout his lifetime. The success of his pictures can be explained by the artist’s ability to combine the real Italian landscape with a fictional notion of a southern idyll. In doing this, Hackert fulfilled all the expectations which travellers had of a present-day that not only brought the ancient myths of the past to life, but also enveloped their social and aesthetic aspirations for the future in a radiant light. Over the course of his life Hackert visited most regions in Italy and celebrated them in his works.
