About the work
This late work by the 68-year old Dahl, who died in the autumn of 1857, was a gift for an artist friend of his. The date of origin, 16th January 1857, noted down in his own hand below the depiction, clearly indicates that the precisely dated drawing cannot be a direct study from nature, as the artist could hardly have seen such leafy trees in mid-January. Dahl was a landscape painter who, having done hundreds of studies, had nature so precisely in his mind’s eye that he could reproduce it in totally persuasively depictions without viewing it directly.
