About the work
Despite several offers of professorships, Dix remained permanently in Hemmenhofen with his family, but visited Dresden regularly. Artistically, Dix was rehabilitated soon after the war and received great recognition in both German states. Nevertheless, the artist was caught between the fronts of the political systems and their polarized views of art. The artist, who always adhered to figuration in his work, was ultimately unable to come to terms with either the abstract postwar modernism in the West nor the socialist realism in the GDR.
