Artist
Carl Wilhelm Götzloff 1799 – 1866
About the work
Carl Wilhelm Götzloff was born in Dresden and, at the age of 15, started attending the art academy there, soon taking part in the landscape class. In 1821 he travelled to Italy, where he remained for the rest of his life, leaving only for a few months. Characteristic of his work is the clear, straightforward drawing style. The pictorial spaces are lucidly arranged and present the beauties of nature in Italy in distinct local colours. When the artist did this watercolour of the port of Genoa in late June 1835, he was on his way back to Dresden accompanied by his future bride Louisa Chentrens; they got married there on 11 December.
