Artist
Adrian Ludwig Richter 1803 – 1884
About the work
The enormous popularity of the artist Ludwig Richter in the 19th century was founded mainly on his numerous illustrations and his extensive woodcuts, whereas his paintings, watercolours and drawings soon shifted into the background. Even this decidedly painterly drawing Woodland Solitude is closely connected with a woodcut. The fairy-tale-like atmosphere links in with a group of Richter’s images in which the forest is presented as a mysterious refuge and celebrated as a place of secure solitude.
