Artist
Johann Georg Wille 1715 – 1808
About the work
In the early 1760s, when Johann Georg Wille did drawings of hard-working people in an austere landscape, he had already reached the zenith of his career as an artist, engraver, art dealer and art philosopher. Wille was a highly regarded member of intellectual society in Paris and maintained the best of contacts with many of the leading artists, writers and the European aristocracy of the time. The son of a miller, he had made a very unusual career for himself. Having recognised his talents at an early age, his father had enabled his son to train as a draughtsman and painter.
