Artist
Johann Carl Baehr 1801 – 1869
About the work
Baehr settled in Dresden in 1832, securing a position at the art academy there in 1840. He made his third trip to Rome in the early autumn of 1834. This drawing, with its view of St. Peter’s in the distance and Castel Sant’Angelo above the Tiber, past the bell tower of Santa Maria del Popolo, was signed by the artist with «Passegiata a Roma”. The word passegiata, or walk, suggests the gratifying perception of a well-known location. Instead of splendid individual buildings, what the work mainly presents is a captivating overall impression.
