Additional title
Winter Evening in the Hegau
Artist
Otto Dix 1891 – 1969
About the work
For Dix, the landscape as a dominant feature of his work during the years of National Socialism was, on the one hand, a way of continuing to work after the loss of Dresden as a place of activity, and on the other, it offered him the opportunity to mirror his own time. Winter Landscape with Moon was painted at the beginning of 1935 and exhibited in New York in the same year. The year before, Dix had been banned from exhibiting in Germany, which deprived him of any public presence. There is something threatening and uncertain about the snowy plain with its towering cloud formations. The promise of the yellow light above remains questionable.
