About the work
M. H. Birge & Sons is considered to be the oldest wallpaper manufacturer in America. Its first factory was opened in Buffalo on Lake Erie in 1877. Until its closure in 1982, its products were regarded as the essence of American taste. They could be seen, among other places, in the film Gone with the Wind in 1939. The company combined hand and machine printing to achieve subtle motif and material effects based on its pattern archive. The company was famous, among others, for wisteria motifs such as the one on show here. An advertisement dated 1902 reads: «Ask to see the Wisteria.”
