Artist
Johan Christian Clausen Dahl 1788 – 1857
About the work
Dahl, who was born in Norway, came to Dresden initially in the course of a grand tour but then chose the city on the river Elbe as the place he would live and work in for the rest of his life. He died there in 1857. In addition to the wildly romantic rocky vales around Dresden, he soon took a liking to the particular charms of Saxon Switzerland. This view of the village of Rathen from the left bank of the Elbe juxtaposes the bizarre sandstone formations above the village in a striking sequence, explicitly underscoring the picturesque uniqueness of the landscape.
