Artist
Otto Dix 1891 – 1969
About the work
In 1938, Dix spent a few weeks in the Engadine. His experience of the high Alps resulted in seven paintings. In the valley near Pontresina with the Bernina Group, Dix captures the Swiss Central Alps: dead trees in the foreground and in the background above blue valleys the Bernina massif covered in snow and ice. It is the barren world in which Friedrich Nietzsche spends the summer months in the 1880s - the philosopher whose writings inspired the young painter at the beginning of the century.
