Artist
Adolf Gottlob Zimmermann 1799 – 1859
About the work
Adolf Gottlob Zimmerman, who came from Upper Lusatia, stayed in Rome from 1825 to 1830. The drawing Colosseum and Surroundings was done during that sojourn.
Artistically, Zimmermann was particularly close to the Nazarenes around Peter Cornelius, Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld and Friedrich Overbeck. Copying biblical themes in the style of the Old Masters and new pictorial inventions in that artistic genre were among his primary concerns. In addition, he produced numerous drawings of views of Italian cities and landscapes. This one belongs to that particular group of works and is today part of the Chemnitz collection.
