Artist
Johann Carl Baehr 1801 – 1869
About the work
The German-Baltic artist Johann Carl Baehr, great-grandson of the architect of the Dresden Frauenkirche, George Bähr (1666–1738), came to Dresden in 1824 to study at the art academy. In 1827 he went on his second trip to Italy which, at the end of May 1828, included several days to Tivoli, about 30 kilometres east of Rome, a town which has been famous since Antiquity. This drawing of a row of houses in the old town centre was done there. Baehr’s rendering is a precise study of the strong contrast between light and shade on the house facades when the sun is high in the sky.
