About the work
Mathematics distinguishes between 17 so-called wallpaper groups. These groups describe all the possibilities there are in the design of a pattern. Today, they play a role in production technology, for example, when exact parts are to be stamped out of a material with as little waste as possible. This objective is again pursued in wall pattern design when a pattern should cover the surface area as evenly as possible on the one hand, but not appear too monotonous on the other. According to pattern designer William Justema, a good pattern gains through repetition.
