About the work
In a letter to his Swiss collector Karl Im Obersteg, the artist counts the painting Messalina among the most powerful works of his early years. Messalina was the third wife of the Roman emperor Claudius (10 BC–54 AD). She is considered to have been dissolute, scheming, and cruel. Her excessive extramarital sex life ultimately led to her downfall and death. The physiognomy of Messalina's head suggests that Katharina Konstantinowka inspired the artist for this portrait. She was a painter and member of the New Artists' Association in Munich. He had already portrayed her several times in ink in 1912. In his memoirs, Jawlensky reported: «In the summer of 1912, we all went to Oberstdorf and stayed there until December. [...] In Oberstdorf, I painted various mountain landscapes, two old men with beards, Konstantinowka, and various very strong women's heads.”
