Artist
Alexej von Jawlensky 1864 – 1941
About the work
Between 1911 and 1914, Alexej von Jawlensky created his most famous works, in which he focused increasingly on portraiture. In doing so, he completely broke away from naturalistic representation in favor of an expressionist painting style characterized by his subjective perception. Until his death, the Russian-German painter explored the theme of the face in a series of works. Typical of his depiction of heads is the reduced image section. The almost square format of the image carrier seems insufficient to capture the voluminous head. Rather, the depiction seeks to break out of the format, a stylistic device that reinforces the impression of an iconic presence.
