About the work
The Girl on Sunday marks the beginning of the New Objectivity style in Dix’s work of the 1920s. It shows the carefully considered composition, which is particularly evident in the details of the interior design, as well as the use of colour, which is inspired by the works of Cranach and Dürer. In a middle-class furnished living room a girl sits on a wooden bench. In contrast to the furnishings of the apartment and the fine Sunday clothes, the girl looks at the viewers with a serious expression. She has strikingly pale skin, a slightly forward bent posture and powerlessly folded hands. In this contradiction is the real message of the picture. Although outwardly everything seems to be taken care of, a feeling of deep loneliness dominates the composition, culminating in the empty chair in front of the window overlooking a cool, anonymous cityscape.
