About the work
Otto Dix's main motif in the interwar period was the human being. In addition to bourgeois society, he also focused his artistic interest on the marginalised: War invalids, beggars and prostitutes. The redhead's sequined dress, the jewellery on her upper arm and the noble-looking waves are diametrically opposed to her pale face and emaciated, skinny body. It seems that the once beautiful and graceful lady in the painting has lost all courage to face life. Before Dix mounted the painting on a carpenter's board, he underpainted the primed support with an egg-oil tempera emulsion and finished the composition with fine layers of oil. The result is an alabaster-coloured skin that reinforces the impression of fragility.
